Rent a talent

The highstreet is full of designer collaborations at the moment, and it’s just been announced that Lanvin will be doing a collection for H&M – time for me to start saving. Here are some of my current designer/highstreet favourites:

Celia Birtwell for John Lewis Large Tulip Cotton Scarf, £40

Pearl Lowe for Peacocks vanity case, £12

H! by Henry Holland check pencil skirt for Debenhams, £11

Venture into unknown territory

I am currently forcing myself to go into high street shops I normally just pass by. Last week it was BikBok’s turn. Given that their current collection is based on ‘Cowboy & Indian’ (just why in your right mind would you do that in a winter full of lace, goth, rock and ladylike glamour???), I actually found quite a few things I liked.

My two favourites:

Chino pants

cartoon scarf

No, not Honduras

Some of my colleagues at work got all excited about the new Banana Republic flagship store that’s opened on Regent Street. Ok. Now the sort of ‘wardrobe staples’ you can buy there aren’t really my kind of thing. Too functional, too impersonal, too ‘I work in the City’ for my quirky girliness. So not surprisingly I didn’t find much I liked in their current collection. However, the two things that did catch my eye, a polka dot skirt and classic knit dress are now very much on my wish list.

Marimekko for H&M

The Catwalk Queens have a great preview of Marimekko’s forthcoming collaboration with H&M. I got really excited when I read about this a while ago. However I feel decidedly underwhelmed by the collection preview. The cuts, the colour schemes (lots of yellow and pink, red and black) are too much of a literal take on the kind of hippie garb my mum used to wear in the early 70s.

Which is a shame since I love Marimekko. Their current spring/summer collection is fab!

Osman Yousefzada for Mango

As I wasn’t due in the office before lunchtime yesterday, I had time to pop into Selfridges to check out the Osman Yousefzada for Mango collection.  I was particularly intrigued by the one shoulder dress and the one with the cape back.

When I arrived at Selfridges, I was quite surprised by the lack of interest in the collection, all dresses were still available in all sizes. I then opted to try on the above mentioned numbers but as expected bodycon and my, err, child bearing hips don’t really work well together. Still, I thought the two dresses I tried on were well made and beautifully designed and would look stunning on anyone of more model proportions.  Just to prove my point, check out the lovely Susie Bubble, who looks amazing in her black and gold number.

The one other dress I tried on, a black and blue shift, worked really well for my shape but I felt it was somewhat the least exciting of all of the dresses.

Osman Yousefzada for Mango, now available at Selfridges in London. Nationwide at selected Mango stores from 17 March. All dresses for around £55.
